The Blue Screen

Diagnosing your blue screen errors and fixing your Windows Blue screen, also known as the Blue Screen of Death (BSoD), Blue Screen stop or a STOP screen is possible if you can understand the cause of it. The term Blue Screen is when your Windows operating system has encountered a most critical and serious system error. Named after the colour of the screen, the Windows bluescreen displays error codes and messages which are relevant to why the system has shut itself down to prevent irreversible damage.

The Windows blue screen codes are informational lists and data for diagnostic reasons to assist in resolving the problem or problems.


Blue Screen Causes

There are many, many causes for blue screen errors such as:

  • Resource conflicts.
  • Hardware or software driver error.
  • Incompatible devices or conflicts.
  • Even temperature problems can cause a Blue Screen error.

Device driver problems is the most common cause of a blue screen of death. Corrupt and obsolete drivers create alot of havoc and can create many other problems aswell. If you are still unsure then use a Driver update utility to scan your computer for all it's drivers, decyphering whether they need to be updated and downloading them for you This is a fantastic piece of software that can very easily stop your computer blue screen.


Diagnosing and fixing Windows blue screen problems

  • Read the blue screen STOP error that is displayed on your screen. The information given is very helpful and will point you in the right direction. If it is a driver that is the cause (check for a .sys file in the STOP error) when you can search for that file and reinstall or update it.
  • View the Windows 'event log'. - The information given here will greatly assist to narrow down what caused your blue screen error codes to appear. As follows: 'Start' then click on 'Control Panel', then 'Administration Tools'. Click on 'Computer Management' and select the 'Event viewer', depending on your operating system. Or simply just type Event viewer in the Search box. Read through for the errors that have occured.

  • Run a virus and spyware scan. Both of these can cause serious system problems subsequentially resulting with a computer blue screen error. View here for more information.
  • Keep your Windows updated. 'Start' - 'All programs' - 'Windows Update' for your most recent operating system downloads and service packs.
  • Update your BIOS. If you have installed a new Windows service pack or installed new hardware then a possible option is to update your BIOS. Over-looked but updating the system BIOS can resolve blue screen problems. Click here for further help.

  • Reboot and click F8 before the Windows screen appears. Select the 'Last known good configuration' and this will hopefully get you back before the problem occured.
